On Portraiture
The truly accomplished work of some of our portrait artists, both past and present, has never ceased to fascinate museum-goers worldwide.
Deserving mention is the Irish war artist, William Orpen (1878-1931) who, among his many other portraits, completed a collection of intense and compassionate paintings of wounded soldiers and army officials.
The American contemporary artist, Alice Neel (1900-1984), has left us with a unique collection of character studies of people of all ages and in all stages of life.
The notorious British artist, Lucien Freud (1922-2011), with his piercing gaze upon the sitter, created powerful portraits of Londoners.
The Canadian artist, Prudence Heward (1896-1947), with her vivid color palette and sculptural compositions, contributed to the contemporary movement in Canadian portraiture.
